From Beginning of Time Until 2019

World History is a survey course that looks at the broader themes, transcending trends, and historical patterns of the human story. There is less emphasis of "on this date" and "who wrote what" history, and more focus on the "why," "how," and the "cause-effect" relationships of history. While the students progress through the history, the course builds in college-ready skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking.

Units are taught with the mindset of breadth first, depth second. Students must understand the broad themes, patterns and big ideas of the era being studied to have a mental frame work to make connections. Then, the course dives into the depth and details of specific societies/people events. This includes the use of biographies, art, poetry, etc. For example: Students first understand the birth and growth of humanism and rapid spread of knowledge from the printing press. Then, the students examine the Sistine Chapel and how Michelangelo embodied humanist and skeptic principles... and painted them IN THE POPE'S HOUSE!

The course is broken down into 9 units:

  • Roots (Beginning to 600BCE): The beginnings of human history and the birth of human civilizations.

  • The Classics (600BCE-450CE): The development of human society to monumental achievements... followed by its unparalleled collapse.

  • Metamorphosis (450-1000CE): Humanity's picks up the broken pieces of the ancient world and begins to lay the foundations of the modern world.

  • Change in the Tide (1000-1500CE): Humanities innovations lead to greater regional interactions.

  • Worlds Collide (1500-1700CE): European exploration changes the shape and face of the human experience, as humanity enters Globalization 1.0

  • Flags of Red (1700-1810CE): An examination of the intellectual explosion of the enlightenment, with the revolutionary political implications

  • Utopia! Utopia? (1810-1919CE): The birth of Industrialization produces so of humanities greatest achievements... and greatest catastrophes.

  • World at War (1920-1992): New technologies bring the world into ever-evolving global conflicts during WWII and the Cold War.

  • Flattening Earth (1992-2019): The quest of humans towards an increasingly interconnected world.

Students will be asked to:

  • Read and analyze non-fiction texts (primary and secondary sources)

  • Understand historical progressions and timelines.

  • Critically think from multiple perspectives, including cause-effect relationships

  • Dive into culture (art, music, poetry, architecture)

  • Build essential skills (note-taking, listening to lecture, writing with supportive evidence)

  • Discuss topics with other homeschool students from across the USA.

Putting Together the Puzzle

Quality history instruction is similar to assembling a puzzle: its about having the right pieces AND the right plan for assembling them. GAPro World History promotes the following path:

  • Broad Themes: First, students to understand the themes, patterns and big ideas of the era being studied. Each unit begins with a general, regional overview, highlighting key elements, timelines and progressions.

  • Indepth Stories/Details: Once the students understand the broad themes, THEN the students will explore the in depth stories and scenarios.
